Quite simply, when quilter Jan Bjorkman’s own home was overflowing with enough quilts to last a lifetime, Celebration Quilters was born. Our website gives us the opportunity to help clients bring their own ideas to the quilting table. Jan helps turn their visions and dreams into tangible quilts for highlighting life’s special moments.

Our first two quilts were t-shirt quilts for high school graduations. Our next was an Anniversary quilt to celebrate Jan’s parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. From these 2 quilt styles, we have added Memorial and Kinder Squares to our ‘menu.’

We are nearing our 25th year making quilts and plan to continue doing so well into the future.

Jan Bjorkman sorts through t-shirts with a client to pick out which ones to use in the quilt.
A retired couple watch as a suprise anniversary quilt is unrolled for them, made with squares from each member of their family.

In 2001, to commemorate her parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, Jan and her daughter found themselves at a café in Michigan sketching out a design for a quilt that could represent and honor their life together. Fabric squares were sent to relatives and friends from Sweden and Germany to Arizona and Michigan.

At the quilt’s center are squares created by their nine grandchildren. The quilt grew as squares began arriving. As the quilt was completed, it bore an uncanny resemblance to the original sketch from the little café in Michigan where it began as a dream. It was unrolled at a surprise party in their honor.

Jan began making t-shirt quilts when a friend asked her to make a quilt for her son, graduating from high school.  It was her first t-shirt quilt and included everything from baby clothes to middle and high school shirts.

Jan’s first Memorial quilt was made in memory of her niece Brita who died in a car accident.  It is a wool and corduroy quilt with 16 applique pansies in the color scheme of purples that she so loved.
